SIM User Alert: Do you have more than one SIM? Do you know how many SIMs a person can have? If not, you should definitely learn about it. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken a major step towards stricter enforcement of SIM card rules to curb cyber fraud, digital fraud, and fake mobile connections.
The department has directed telecom companies not to issue new mobile connections to customers who have reached the prescribed limit. To achieve this, the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) will be used, where the identity and photos of customers who have reached the limit will be available.
The maximum limit for mobile connections in our country is already fixed. In general, a person can have a maximum of nine mobile connections in their name. In Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Northeastern states, this limit is six. Now, DoT has decided to implement a new monitoring mechanism to ensure strict compliance with this rule.
The Department of Telecommunications’ Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) analyzes customer data provided by various telecom companies. This reveals the total number of mobile numbers active in a given individual’s name. Representative photographs of customers who have reached the threshold will now be provided on this platform. This will facilitate customer identification before issuing a new SIM.
What happens if you have more SIMs than the limit?
The DoT has clarified that if a person has more SIMs than the limit and a new connection is activated, it should be immediately suspended. This connection will remain closed until the issue related to the additional SIM is resolved.
Integration to be completed by November 30
In the past few years, banking fraud, cyber fraud, fake calls, and online crime have increased rapidly through fake SIM cards. In many cases, large numbers of mobile connections have been obtained in the name of a single person and misused. The government believes that better monitoring of mobile connections will help curb such crimes.
