
Nagpur: The Crime Branch Unit-6 has cracked a house theft case in Koradi and arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly stealing gold ornaments and other valuables worth Rs 27.78 lakh from his uncle’s residence. Police said the accused was the complainant’s nephew and was staying at the house when the theft took place.
The accused has been identified as Shantanu Chandu Wankhede (22), a resident of Madhan in Chandur Bazar taluka of Amravati district.
According to police, the theft occurred between 2 pm on August 16 and 10 am on August 18 at Quarter No. 53/4 in the KTPS Colony, Koradi. The house belongs to complainant Sanjay Wamanrao Wankhede, 19, according to the police complaint.
The complainant told police that he had checked the gold ornaments kept in an iron cupboard at around 11 pm on August 16. At that time, his wife and nephew Shantanu were present at the house.
The complainant remained at home on August 17. On August 18, he went to the bus stand to drop his nephew, who was leaving for his native place. After returning home, he checked the cupboard at around 10 am and found that several valuables were missing.
The stolen property included various gold ornaments, a gold biscuit, gold coins and silver utensils. Suspecting his nephew of committing the theft, the complainant approached Koradi Police Station.
Based on his complaint, police registered a case against the accused under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Meanwhile, Crime Branch Unit-6 launched a parallel investigation and carried out a technical probe to trace the suspect. Acting on the information gathered during the investigation, the police team tracked down Shantanu and took him into custody within 24 hours.
During intensive interrogation, police said, the accused confessed to committing the theft.
Police subsequently recovered 230 grams of gold ornaments and a mobile phone, collectively valued at Rs 27.78 lakh, from his possession.
The accused, along with the recovered property, was handed over to Koradi Police for further legal action. Further investigation is underway.
