Less than a decade ago, Jordan Firstman went megaviral for impersonating banana bread’s publicist. That lo-fi, front-facing comedy gave way to great indie movies, which led to starring on I Love LA, and now culminates in his star vehicle, Club Kid, one of the most exciting upcoming awards-season prospects. The trailer for the film, which came out today, is shockingly sweet for a comedian whose work is typically lacerating. It teases an oddball-duo comedy about a partier named Peter (Firstman) who finds out he has a son named Arlo (Reggie Absolom). Peter is an unnatural fit as a father — he awakes one morning to find Arlo wearing a T-shirt that says “I love Björk and bareback” — but he loves Arlo deeply. “Since you got here, I’ve been feeling better about myself,” he tells his son. As a movie about an unlikely man learning to be a father, it kind of looks like it could be called Gay-mer vs. Gay-mer, About a Boy Toy, or Pig Daddy.

Club Kid was a hit at its Cannes premiere this year, quickly becoming the talk of the Riviera. The film, which also stars Diego Calva and Cara Delevingne, scored rave reviews, with our critic Alison Willmore writing that “Club Kid is funny, and filled with deft jokes, but there’s a stylistic exuberance to it that attests to how Firstman wasn’t just thinking in terms of verbal punchlines.” After a bidding war, A24 won the release rights for $17 million, and now it’s heading straight for a primo award-season release in November. Get ready to roll.
