Princess Eugenie has honoured Queen Elizabeth II by naming her baby daughter Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.
The princess, 36, said the names had been inspired by people she and Jack Brooksbank, her husband, “love and admire, past and present”.
The birth in Portugal of Adelaide, their third child, was announced
earlier this month by Buckingham Palace.
The couple, who split their time between Portugal and London, released a picture of the newborn wearing a pink onesie with angel wings and a hat, and gripping her father’s index finger.
The name Elizabeth was inspired by the princess’ late grandmother, while Adelaide was inspired by Queen Adelaide, who was married to King William IV, as well as by the late Maria Adelaide of Portugal.
When she was born, the King and Queen said they were “delighted” with the news, which was announced on the Royal family’s official Instagram page with a picture of the baby taken by Brooksbank.
The newborn, who will be 15th in line to the throne, was named Annina after a personal connection of the couple.
Announcing her new name on Instagram, the princess wrote: “Two weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we’ve had the most special, cosy and love-filled time.”
She added: “We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire, past and present, including her great-grandmother who we hold close in our hearts.
“Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home.”
The baby will not automatically become eligible for Portuguese citizenship. All babies born in the country must be registered and at least one parent must have been legally residing in the country for three consecutive years at the time of birth to become eligible for citizenship.
The couple said they were deeply grateful for the care they received from hospital staff in Portugal, where they have had a home since 2022.
The princess announced her pregnancy in an Instagram post in May, writing: “Baby Brooksbank due 2026!” followed by a series of red heart emojis and one of a baby.
