With a Sept. 15 deadline looming to sign an eight-year extension before the NHL’s new collective bargaining agreement takes effect, there remains a gap between Batherson and the Senators on a new contract.
Steve Staios, the club’s president of hockey operations and general manager, wants to keep Batherson and the right-winger has expressed a desire to stay, which means there is no reason to believe the two sides can’t get a deal done, but time is of the essence.
League sources “don’t believe” Batherson and the Senators “are close to a deal at this time.”
