Despite the cooler weather and relief from the heat, the monsoon can cause changes in temperature, humidity, daily habits and lifestyles, which can impact individuals with underlying heart disease or conditions. One condition to be considered is atrial fibrillation (AF), a type of irregular heartbeat in which the heart can beat rapidly or irregularly.
Some people with AF may find that their symptoms are more noticeable when the weather is hot or cold, or when their usual routine is disrupted. While rain by itself is not a cause of atrial fibrillation, a few factors that occur with the monsoon can trigger it, especially in individuals who are at risk.
A stable temperature is maintained by our body at all times. Changes in temperature and humidity can influence heart rate, blood pressure and the body’s fluid balance. Individuals with heart disease might be more affected by these variations.
People also tend to alter their regular exercise habits, sleep routines and diet during the rainy season. These are also indirect effects on cardiovascular health due to decreased physical activity, increased salt/processed food intake, and alterations in fluid intake.
