Now that House of the Dragon is done dominating your Sundays, maybe you want to use your HBO Max to watch a movie now? As always, the HBO streaming catalogue is one of the densest in the industry, thanks largely to the remarkable history of Warner Bros. and the company’s collaborations with Studio Ghibli, TCM, and Criterion. But what’s new this month? Here’s a handful of titles that stand out from the deep catalogue.
Year: 2015Runtime: 2hDirector: Mamoru Hosoda
You’ve probably already dipped into the Studio Ghibli catalogue, but there are some other phenomenal auteurs of Japanese animation on the streaming service, too. Mamoru Hosoda is a modern master, and this fantasy-action movie remains one of his most captivating. Some of it is narratively familiar, but it’s never anything less than visually stunning. ➽ Streaming now.
Year: 2026Runtime: 1h 46mDirector: Kristoffer Borgli
Robert Pattinson and Zendaya star in one of the most divisive movies of 2026, a flick you need to see in order to be a part of the debate. Since the trailers didn’t spoil the twist, we won’t do so here, although be warned that this movie is not what you think it is. It’s a sharp comedy about how much we truly know about those we love and how much we’re willing to forgive. It’s not quite as smart as it thinks it is, but the two leads are phenomenal. (So is Alana Haim.) ➽ Streaming now.
Year: 2019Runtime: 1h 50mDirector: Robert Eggers
Is this the best COVID-lockdown movie? Sure, it came out the year before, but a lot of people watched it on streaming while they were going crazy with people with whom they were stuck with. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe are fearless in Robert Eggers’s black-and-white nightmare about two people who learn that nothing is scarier than being trapped with someone unbearable. It’s a twisted gem. ➽ Streaming now.
Year: 2025Runtime: 1h 49mDirector: Francis Lawrence
The very long-awaited adaptation of one of Stephen King’s first stories was a critical and commercial hit but hasn’t been widely available on a subscription streaming service before now. Cooper Hoffman and the next Black Panther, David Jonsson, really anchor this film about a twisted walking contest in which the last boy standing is the only one to survive. It’s harrowing stuff, elevated further by the feeling that you’re watching two future household names. ➽ Streaming now.
Year: 2026Runtime: 1h 52mDirector: David Lowery
One of America’s most original directors returned this year with this underrated movie following an aging pop diva (Anne Hathaway) who reunites with her former costume designer (Michaela Coel) to devise a look for her comeback. A story of how friendship, success, and creativity can struggle to share space, it’s a performance piece with great turns from Hathaway and Coel, who helped devise the project with David Lowery. ➽ Streaming August 21.
Year: 1986Runtime: 1h 28mDirector: Rob Reiner
One of the best Stephen King adaptations remains this coming-of-age story based on the author’s novella The Body. The movie gained an overdue reappreciation after the passing of its brilliant director in late 2025. Rob Reiner directed a fantastic young cast that includes River Phoenix, Jerry O’Connell, Wil Wheaton, and Corey Feldman as four friends who go on a hike to find a dead body. ➽ Streaming now.
