Former boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33, 11 years after sustaining severe brain injuries during a professional fight, Al Jazeera has reported. Colon, considered one of the sport’s promising talents, was left in a coma for 221 days after his 2015 bout against American boxer Terrel Williams.

The super-welterweight contest in October 2015 concluded with Williams winning by ninth-round disqualification, following Colon’s team removing his gloves after he complained of dizziness, according to Al Jazeera. During the fight, Colon alleged that Williams repeatedly struck him on the back of the head with illegal blows known as “rabbit punches”. The referee penalised Williams with a point after one such complaint.

Following the bout, Colon collapsed in his dressing room and was diagnosed with a subdural haematoma. He underwent emergency brain surgery and was placed in a coma. After regaining consciousness 221 days later, the severity of the neurological damage left him reliant on continuous care for the rest of his life, Al Jazeera reported.

Prichard’s father, Richard Colon, confirmed his son’s passing on Facebook, stating, “I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world. Now he is in a better world.” Colon died at home with his family in Florida. Before his injury, he had remained unbeaten in 16 professional fights, achieving 13 victories by knockout.
