American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson has been invited to compete in the women’s 100m at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, set to take place in Budapest from September 11 to 13. The event will be held at Budapest’s National Athletics Centre, returning Richardson to the site where she secured her first world title two years ago.
Richardson shared the invitation on her Instagram stories on Tuesday. The 26-year-old set a championship record of 10.65 seconds to win the 100m title at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and also anchored the United States to gold in the 4x100m relay at the same event.
Although Richardson did not secure an automatic invitation through the primary qualifying routes—finishing second behind Julien Alfred in the 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympics and fifth at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo—she remains among the top sprinters globally. She is also eligible through the ranking system, having won her third US 100m title at New York’s Icahn Stadium on July 24 with a time of 10.77 seconds, the fastest by an American woman this year.
Currently ranked fourth worldwide, Richardson is positioned favourably for inclusion in the season-ending championship. This inaugural event will feature approximately 360 athletes competing in 28 disciplines over three evening sessions. Automatic qualification was granted to Paris 2024 Olympic and 2025 World Championship winners, with additional places given to Diamond League Final victors, highest-ranked athletes after the qualification period, and selected invitees.
The qualification period concludes on September 1, with World Athletics scheduled to announce the final entrant list on September 7. Richardson’s participation promises to add excitement to the 100m competition, offering her a chance to compete once more at a venue where she delivered a career-defining performance.
