A new trailer for Verity has arrived, and I’m ready to have a few nightmares.
In the brief clip, which can be viewed above, Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) is hired to ghostwrite the remaining novels in a successful series penned by world-renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) after she becomes paralyzed due to a mysterious accident. Verity’s husband (Josh Harnett) insists that Lowen is the perfect writer for the job… but it’s not long before she discovers Verity’s secret, autobiographical writings that reveal the truth about her life and marriage, and starts to lose her mind.
The film is based on the best-selling Colleen Hoover novel of the same name, with Michael Showalter (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) directing from a screenplay adapted by Cape Fear showrunner Nick Antosca.
“I don’t think people know what to expect from it and I like that, because it’s way different than the other Colleen Hoover books,” Harnett previously told People. “It’s sexy, it’s mysterious and it’s a little bit gothic and a little bit scary, and it’s wild. And I think it’s gonna be surprising for audiences.”
The novel hit shelves in 2018, with a film adaptation announced in 2020. Subservience (the M3GAN-esque erotic thriller starring Megan Fox) writers April Maguire and Will Honley wrote the initial draft before Antosca took over.
