On a quiet street of honey-coloured buildings in perhaps Mallorca's prettiest village, Matthew Williamson is proudly overseeing his shop of beautiful objects.
The designer, who received royal favour in 2012 when the then-Duchess of Cambridge wore one of his dresses, is best known for spurring the boho-chic fashion trend championed by Kate Moss and Sienna Miller.
Now he has opened Caserra 71, a den of unapologetically exuberant design on the high street in Deià on the Mediterranean island's north-west coast.
Matthew's vision is spread across three rooms, although he has plans to extend into the basement with a bar.
"The idea is to create a relaxed gathering space as an extension of the store," he tells HELLO! in an exclusive interview. "Less of a bar but more of a deli serving drinks, small plates, pastries and dried goods – somewhere that feels intimate and very much part of the Caserra 71 experience.
"I’m so busy with the store right now that this will most likely happen in 2027."
Matthew, 54, who was born in Manchester and founded his eponymous fashion house in 1997, named the shop after his birth year and the Spanish word for "house in the mountains".
"It grew very organically from my love of collecting vintage pieces, and my career in interior and fashion design," he says. "It’s a reflection of everything I love and have learnt poured into one space – beautiful craftsmanship, character and timeless design. I knew it was the next chapter for me as soon as I saw the house become available. It sits on the main street in Deià, where me and my family have lived for the past ten years."
Its contents are a magpie's fancy from markets across Europe, he says. "The thrill is always in discovering something unexpected – a beautifully weathered piece of furniture, hand-thrown ceramics or antique textiles with incredible patina. It’s the hunt I enjoy as much as the find.
"My favourite spots so far to find great fashion and homeware have been Barcelona, Amsterdam and Berlin. Sourcing is one of the favourite parts of my new job now."
Matthew now lives in the village with Joseph Velosa, who co-founded his fashion label alongside him, and their daughter, Skye, ten. The former couple ended their romantic relationship in 2004 after more than ten years but were able to turn from lovers into best friends. How do they make it work?
"Joseph and I have been together for 33 years," he says. "We’re focused on creating a happy, supportive environment for our daughter, Skye. Mutual respect is key, friendship and a 50/50 shared workload wherever possible seems to work well for us."
Matthew's favourite space at home is their garden, where he has his morning coffee and dinners with Joseph and Skye most evenings.
His typical day involves dropping Skye at school before working in the shop and finding time for "a good few hours" at his design studio at home.
"I’m loving painting at the moment so will try to fit some time in for that. With Skye, it’s the simple things – beach time, walks, swimming and exploring the island together. She also loves to work alongside me creatively in the studio too, which is where we can spend hours together and have a good natter."
