A suspected paedophile has taken his life as NSW Police officers raided his home.

Detectives from the Sex Crimes Squad were investigating the man over the alleged possession of child abuse material.

They arrived at his Grose St address in Leura just after 7am on Tuesday to execute a  search warrant.

Police said the 41-year-old man harmed himself while officers were inside the property.

In a statement, NSW Police said officers found the man in a bedroom wielding a knife.

'As officers entered the room, the man stabbed himself,' the statement said.

'Police immediately rendered first aid and sought assistance from NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, the man died at the scene.'

A critical incident team from Mt Druitt Police Area Command will lead an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The small village of Leura is a popular tourist spot for people visiting the Blue Mountains National Park.

Grose Street is within walking distance of Leura's main street and a number of schools, childcare centres, a playground and a disability support service.

The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
