BMW has commenced bookings for the X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India ahead of its official launch scheduled for August 21. The upcoming SUV expands the brand’s locally assembled portfolio and will become BMW’s most affordable long-wheelbase model powered by an internal combustion engine in the country.
The X1 LWB is based on the standard X1 but features a longer wheelbase to offer improved rear-seat comfort. It joins the electric iX1 Long Wheelbase, which is already available in the Indian market, giving buyers another option in the premium compact luxury SUV segment.
Originally developed for the Chinese market, the BMW X1 LWB measures 4616 mm in length, 1845 mm in width and 1641 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2802 mm. Compared to the standard X1, it is 116 mm longer, features a 110 mm longer wheelbase and stands 11 mm taller.
While the proportions have changed, the exterior styling remains largely familiar. The SUV continues with BMW’s signature kidney grille, slim LED headlamps, LED tail-lamps and a crossover-inspired silhouette. Overseas models are available with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 20-inch units offered as an option. However, the India-spec model could feature smaller wheels to prioritise ride comfort, similar to the standard X1 sold here.
The cabin layout closely resembles that of the regular X1, but the extended wheelbase translates into greater rear passenger space. Rear occupants benefit from increased legroom, while the rear seat height has been raised by 27 mm. BMW has also widened the rear headrests by 37 mm for improved comfort.
Practicality has improved as well, with boot capacity increasing to 540 litres, up from 476 litres in the standard X1.
Expected equipment includes a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone charging, powered front seats, automatic climate control and a powered tailgate. Depending on the variant, the SUV may also offer a Harman Kardon audio system, connected car technology, digital key functionality and automatic parking assistance.
BMW has not yet announced the powertrain options for the Indian-spec X1 LWB. The standard X1 in India is available with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 136 HP and a 2.0-litre diesel developing 150 HP.
Internationally, the long-wheelbase version is offered with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine generating 204 HP and 300 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and is available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.
The front-wheel-drive version completes the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 7.9 seconds, while the all-wheel-drive variant does the same in 7.7 seconds.
The standard BMW X1 is currently priced between Rs. 50.90 lakhs and Rs. 52.90 lakhs (ex-showroom). The X1 Long Wheelbase is expected to carry a premium over the regular model, particularly if BMW introduces the more powerful 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in India.
Once launched, the X1 LWB is expected to occupy a unique space in the Indian luxury car market, as there are currently no direct rivals offering a long-wheelbase configuration in the entry-level luxury SUV segment. Like the standard X1 and iX1 LWB, the new model will be locally assembled at BMW’s Chennai manufacturing facility.
