Breaking Zeus’s law broke the box office. The Odyssey has officially passed. 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises to become Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date. The epic has made $1.1 billion (compared to TDKR’s $1.08 billion) to date, and still has the legs to make more. According to Variety, $289 million of that billie is from Imax screenings. Which means The Odyssey has beat Avatar to become the highest-grossing Imax film ever, too. Sorry to Big Jim.
And yet, even with this record-breaking box office, The Odyssey isn’t even the highest-grossing Tom Holland/Zendaya/John Bernthal movie in theaters right now. Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed a billion in the middle of the week. At the end of its second week in theaters, it stands at $1.6 billion and counting. Brand New Day is the second-fastest movie to make a billion dollars, after Avengers: Endgame. The lesson is clear: make Tom Holland miserable and people will pay any amount of money to see him get better. The Fred Astaire biopic probably needs a page one rewrite to incorporate this data.
