Eastern China is preparing for the approach of Typhoon Dolphin, which is expected to make landfall on Sunday, Chinese state media reported.

Ningbo Airport in Zhejiang Province, about 150 kilometres south-east of Shanghai, suspended operations on Saturday evening. The reports said that more than 800 commercial vessels had sought shelter in the city's port.

China's national weather agency has issued its highest-level warning. The typhoon is expected to make landfall along the coast of the south-eastern provinces of Zhejiang or Fujian sometime on Sunday.

Meteorologists expect the typhoon to weaken into a tropical storm and continue moving north-west. They are predicting heavy rainfall across large parts of China.
