Speed Post service: If you send Rakhi, bank passbook, Aadhaar card, or other important documents via speed post on Rakshabandhan, there’s good news for you.

Speed Post service: India Post has implemented several important changes to its Speed Post service, effective August 1, 2026. 24-hour and 48-hour guaranteed delivery has now been introduced between select cities. Importantly, if delivery fails within the stipulated time, the full postage fee will be refunded.

Which cities will offer 24-hour delivery?

Currently, the new 24-Speed Post and 24-Speed Post Parcel services have been launched between six major cities in the country.

Delhi
Mumbai
Chennai
Kolkata
Bengaluru
Hyderabad

Documents or parcels booked between these cities are targeted for next-day (D+1) delivery. 48-Speed Post will offer two-day (D+2) delivery. This service will be expanded to Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities in the future.

What will now be considered a document and what will be considered a parcel?

In the new rules, India Post has clarified the categories of documents and parcels, so there is no confusion during booking.

Documents will include:

  • Aadhaar card, PAN card, voter ID, driving license, and passport
  • Bank passbook, checkbook, bank statement, welcome kit
  • Credit/debit cards, and insurance documents
  • Non-commercial Rakhi envelopes, small packets, and greeting cards for Rakshabandhan weighing up to 500 grams

Parcels will fall under the category of:

  • Mobile phones and other electronic goods
  • Clothing and ready-made garments
  • Gift items and other heavy goods

What will be the new speed post charges?

Starting August 1st, the charges will be based on weight, distance, and service. GST will be charged separately.

Service charge
Up to 50 grams (local) ₹38
Up to 50 grams (other cities) ₹94
51-250 grams ₹118 to ₹154
251-500 grams ₹140 to ₹186
48 Speed Post ₹61 to ₹121
24 Speed Post for contracted customers ₹38 to ₹100

Meanwhile, 24-hour parcel service charges up to 500 grams will start at ₹200. Parcels weighing 4.5 to 5 kilograms can go up to ₹990, depending on the distance.

What other benefits will you get in the new service?

India Post has also added several new features to make delivery more reliable than before.
