Kyle Walker hits winner in Burnley shootout victory
Alex Neil felt Lukas Jensen deserved his moment of glory after the fit-again goalkeeper saved all four QPR penalties to take Millwall through to the second round of the Carabao Cup.
After a 1-1 draw, with a late Mark Sykes own goal bringing Rangers level after Luke Cundle’s opener, Millwall won 2-0 in a shootout which included six missed spot-kicks. Jensen, back after a long injury lay-off, kept out penalties from Ilias Chair, Harvey Vale, Koki Saito and Kwame Poku.
The Millwall manager said: “To save four penalties is really, really rare. And to put in the context behind that, Lukas has been missing for 15 months – he had a bad injury and then came back and had a setback. I think he would have been dreaming about that moment for 15 months – making four penalty saves and being the reason we’re through to the next round. And I’m absolutely delighted for him because he’s a great professional and a good lad, so fair play to him.”
Burnley prevailed 4-3 in a shootout to book their place in the second round after the Championship club had been held to a 1-1 draw by League One Notts County at Turf Moor. Veteran defender Kyle Walker held his nerve with the winning kick after Clarets goalkeeper Max Weiss had saved from Emile Acquah and Jacob Bedeau.
Russell Martin celebrated his first competitive game in charge of Leicester with a 1-0 victory over Northampton thanks to Caleb Okoli’s first-half goal. The former Southampton and Rangers manager has been tasked with leading Leicester’s recovery following relegation to League One and overcame a spirited showing from League Two opponents at the King Power Stadium.
Andre Brooks scored on his debut as Norwich cruised to a 4-1 victory over visitors MK Dons. The Canaries made a blistering start at Carrow Road, pouncing on some sloppy defending to grab an early two-goal advantage. Mohamed Touré was put clean through by Kenny McLean after the Dons had made a hash of their first attempt to play out from the back and blasted home with just 40 seconds on the clock.
The hosts then made it 2-0 after seven minutes as Touré picked out Anis Ben Slimane who calmly found the corner. Norwich effectively settled the issue on 43 minutes when Brooks’ shot found the net via a deflection off Ben Chrisene, who was credited with the goal. The Dons pulled one back on 56 minutes through Ryan Wintle, but Brooks made it four just before the hour.
Tony Mowbray wants to see more cutting edge from his Blackburn side after his return to the club began with a comeback 2-1 win at League One Burton. Substitutes Andri Gudjohnsen and Jayden Fevrier netted late goals to secure victory after Zac Scutt’s opener. “We got there in the end.” Mowbray said. “We said at half-time that we should have scored four or five goals. Not could have. Should have.”
Delano Burgzorg scored the winning penalty in the shootout after Jusef Erabi equalised in stoppage time for 10-man Preston to knock out Huddersfield. The game took place at Goodison Park, the former Everton men’s ground, due to Preston’s Deepdale pitch not being ready. Daniel Iversen saved two penalties, after a thrilling end to normal time that ended 1-1 when Erabi cancelled out Radinio Balker’s strike. Preston played 69 minutes without Lewis Gibson who was shown a red card.
Sheffield Wednesday’s manager, Henrik Pedersen, praised his team’s performance after they beat Championship side Bolton 1-0. Substitute Jamal Lowe scored in the 70th minute. Bolton had Xavier Simons sent off in the 56th minute when he received a red card after clashing with Harry Gray.
Pedersen said: “I saw a lot of steps in the right direction for our aggressive pressing, for our quick transition, more players higher up when we won the ball, more forward mindset. We keep on going, and they keep on working as a group. It means everything in this situation where we are.”
Arkell Jude-Boyd scored the decisive spot-kick as Shrewsbury beat Salford 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Both goalkeepers starred in a remarkable shootout which saw nine penalties missed before Jude-Boyd fired into the top corner.
An unlucky own goal from Ollie Norburn and a late strike from Robert Bozenik gave Stoke a 2-0 win over Oldham, while Birmingham booked their place in round two with a narrow 1-0 win at Championship rivals Swansea. August Priske’s goal a minute before the break proved decisive at the Swansea.com Stadium, with the big Danish striker steering the ball into the far corner after Carlos Vincente had sent a cross back across goal following a long free-kick into the box.
