A fresh political storm gathered pace in Uttar Pradesh on Friday after Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav seized upon governor Anandiben Patel’s remarks on shortcomings at a Gorakhpur university, using them to launch a sharp attack on the BJP-led state government.
Yadav shared a video clip from Patel’s address at the convocation ceremony of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University, where the governor highlighted concerns over student welfare, campus facilities and the challenges facing higher education.
During her speech, Patel drew attention to issues including the quality of food available to students from outside vendors, hostel conditions, repair work on campus, mess and canteen arrangements, and the growing problem of drug abuse among young people.
Her observations assumed political significance as they came in Gorakhpur, the stronghold of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, with Yadav using the remarks as a springboard to question the state government’s governance record.
In a post on X, the SP chief said the governor’s comments had exposed what he described as the reality behind the “Gorakhpur Model”. He also drew comparisons with the BJP’s “Gujarat Model”, alleging that both reflected the shortcomings of BJP governance and accusing the party of presiding over corruption.
Yadav further remarked that internal contradictions had turned the idea of a “double engine” government into what he called a “trouble engine”.
The BJP had not issued a response to Yadav’s remarks at the time of reporting.
