Pride Parade: It’s time to show your colours. Windsor-Essex’s Pride Parade — a tradition since 1992 — begins at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9 on Ottawa Street, starting at Argyle Road and proceeding to Langlois Avenue. All are welcome to line the street and fly their rainbow flags. Immediately after the parade, the celebration continues at Lanspeary Park. Comedian Mel Lucier and drag performer Sabin will co-host a day of revelries and entertainment.
Pow Wow: The Caldwell First Nation Pow Wow is back Aug. 7-9. Enjoy Indigenous dancers, drummers, artisans and visitors from across Turtle Island for a three day celebration of culture, identity and community. Hosted at Caldwell First Nation (Mersea Road 1) in Leamington, enjoy traditional dance, music, art and the spirit of connection among First Nations. Gates open at 10 a.m. Admission is $10 per person.
Fresh finds: The Lakeside Market makes its debut at the Atlas Tube Centre (447 Renaud Line) in Lakeshore on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors can browse handmade goods, farm-to-table products, specialty foods, vintage finds and more. The family-friendly event also features community organizations and entertainment.
Mic check: The Windsor Hip Hop Festival takes over Ernest Atkinson Park (2005 Riverside Dr. W.) on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., celebrating the city’s music scene and the creativity of its hip hop community. The full-day event features local and regional artists, DJs, dancers, visual artists and community vendors, with live performances, breakdancing, graffiti and live art displays, food vendors and more.
House royalty: International DJ Benny Benassi brings his iconic electro-house sound to downtown Windsor for a day-to-night dance party at the Pelissier Street Parking Garage (406 Pelissier St.) on Saturday, Aug. 8. The Grammy-award winning artist headlines the outdoor event, with a lineup of local and regional DJs helping set the pace from 4 p.m. until midnight. An option after party at Prototype Nightclub, located a block away, will keep the music going late. Tickets available online.
Shark! Catch a movie from the water during Drive-In Movies at the Windsor International Aquatic Centre (401 Pitt St. W.) on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 7-10 p.m. Presented in partnership with the Windsor International Film Festival, the unique summer experience lets guests float, swim or relax poolside while watching the classic thriller Jaws on the big screen. The series continues throughout August with screenings of Finding Nemo and Shark Tale at Windsor pools.
Roller revival: A piece of Windsor’s roller-skating history comes back to life at City Hall Square (400 City Hall Sq. E.) on Friday, Aug. 7 from 6-10 p.m. Wheels Nights transforms the downtown square into an outdoor roller rink inspired by the city’s beloved Wheels! roller-skating rink. The free event features music, DJs, colourful lighting, themed entertainment, costumes and skate rentals.
