Editor’s note: Line 5 is an oil pipeline owned by Enbridge that transports crude oil from Western Canada. It passes under the Straits of Mackinac connecting Lake Michigan to Lake Huron, ending at Sarnia. On July 31, the Michigan Supreme Court ordered state regulators to reconsider a permit that allowed a planned tunnel for the pipeline under part of the Great Lakes to go ahead.
